A Case of Neurocysticercosis in Children
Kwon Soon-Hak

Abstract
Cysticercosis is caused by the larval forms of Taenia Solium. Cysts may be found anywhere in the body. Brain and/or Spinal cord involvement results in Neurocysticercosis. It occurs worldwide, but is more frequently reported in areas with poor sanitation such as Central and South America, Africa, and Asia etc. Cysts in the brain cause seizures, hydrocephalus, focal neurologic deficits, behavioral changes and other neurologic manifestation. Cysts in the spinal cord may cause gait disturbances, sensory changes in the extremities and other neurologic deficits. Diagnosis is made primarily by neuroimaging, However ELISA may be useful in substantiating the diagnosis. The treatmE:nt is based on the number of lesion, location,. and presence or absence of inflammation. Mast cases require medical intervention such as praziquantel or albendazole, steroid, anticonvulsants and may undergo surgical intervention such as cyst removal, V-P shunt etc. Many cases already have been reported in Korean adults, However the experience is quite limited in pediatrics. I have experienced a ~:ase of neurocysticercosis which was successfully treated with praziquantel, dexamethasone, and phenytoin etc. The case is discussed based on the available literature.
